About the project

The microclimate on the roof of buildings may differ from that found at ground level, given that there is greater exposure to radiation and wind. Plants from hostile environments, cultivated or even found spontaneously in nature, could be an interesting solution for use in green roofs intended for agricultural production in urban environments. It is intended to evaluate the adaptation of edible plants from the central and southern areas of the country, traditionally used, to green roofs in the Lisbon area. It is intended to contribute to its preservation, helping to find more sustainable solutions for urban rooftop agriculture.

Objectives and relevance of the project: it is intended to evaluate the ability to produce edible plants, commonly used in traditional foods currently little known, adopting as a place of planting green roofs. In addition to recovering the use of these plants, it is intended to take advantage of the rustic characteristics presented by some, with the aim of finding suitable species for production in green roofs in the Lisbon area. For this purpose, a survey of edible plants was carried out, both species of wild origin, as cultivars traditionally used in the Center and South of the country, and a green roof was built to study its adaptation and development. The species' nutritional characteristics and related innovative applications, based on traditions already existing are currently under study.
